One year on

So, there we were at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Eleven members of the family, gathered at my mother's graveside. A few minutes before, a year ago, my mother had suddenly passed away. The sun beamed down, the mercury was at the 70F mark and gentle breezes stirred the leaves on the trees in the cemetery. Flowers were left in vases, the variety that have a pin to stick them in the ground with. Pots of flowers were also left, if only because my mother was fond of plants and flowers.

A year has passed. It went by so quick in retrospect. Yes, I miss my mother, and I'm not denying that for one second. But I have good memories to hold on to, to counterbalance the sad ones.

Sadly I am all to familiar with those vases of flowers that stick in the ground. My parents, my husband, my little grandson...time goes by and we miss them, but I like you do have some wonderful memories too. My sympathies.

That one-year mark is very real and very important. I think you have done a really good job grieving, and from what you've written it sounds like your father is doing well, too. I'm glad so many members of your family were able to be there today.
