End of month

Smoking will become outlawed in all enclosed public spaces in Holland as of July 1st, i.e. tonight at midnight. I'm mightily relieved - tobacco smoke makes me unwell and can in extreme circumstances make me throw up. Has happened. Also, when you come home from a smokey place, your hair, clothes and everything reeks, and you have to change your clothes and take a quick shower. I could not believe the amount of whingeing being shown on Dutch TV tonight from people moaning about the meddling state. The ban, already common in much of Europe, was introduced on health grounds. Since the introduction of a similar prohibition in Scotland in March 2006, barstaff (e.g.) have noticed a distinct improvement in their health.

I've spent today scanning photographs from 1997, from the months prior to my departure to the UK. The pictures can be found on my two Flickr accounts. The photos of a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales (part) and Western Scotland can be found here.
Pictures of a cycling trip round the Frisian town of Heerenveen, and of a daytrip to Vlieland (now well-known to most of my readers) here. Please allow an hour for the upload and annotations to be completed.

The weather will see a brief tropical spell down here. Tomorrow, the mercury will exceed 80F and on Wednesday, some forecasters see us hitting 90F. I'm not looking forward to this at all. A thundery breakdown will follow late on Wednesday and through until Friday.

I find myself surprised any more if I enter a (public) place where smoking is still allowed.  I used to have to NOT frequent such places, and now can.  (I have allergies to them, and I have asthma, so yeah, I get ill, too.)  I'm glad to hear this.

Laughing at you NOT looking fowards at all to potentially 90F weather.  Oh, I prefer the 70's or 80's myself, but it's summertime, and we're lucky whenever the temperatures here stay that low:)

Wishing you good days.

I despise cigarettes.  I lost my Dad at only 52 to his many packs-a-day habit.  It SHOULD be outlawed in all public places.  Why should innocent people die from secondhand smoke?  You would NOT like summers here in the southeastern USA.  We have topped out over 100 degrees lots of days, especially in July and August.  I am NOT looking forward to it.

I loved your photos.  So many breathtaking scenes.  Thanks so much for sharing them with us!~

Blessings!~

I know here in NY the ban has been in effect for a few years now. I've also noticed I can't stand the smell of tobacco since I've quit smoking. I never knew how much it smelled in clothing and hair until I quit. Doc quit a few months ago himself. I can't tell you how relieved I was. It's hard to believe I actually smoked for over 25 years. Tobacco smoke can give me a headache, and cigar smoke in particular can close up my throat.  I'm glad they're enforcing a ban in Holland, too.  Wow, 80 degrees!  You must really be suffering a shock after living in the cooler Hebridean climate for so long!

i am very happy to hear they are outlawing smoking in enclosed public areas.  i think some of my breathing problems now are from 19 years of my father's constant smoking in the house.  second hand smoke is worse than smoking itself.  and i love going out to hear bands and concerts, but don't like the smoke and the way i smell when i return home, so gave them up.  good to hear you are among those who don't smoke as well.

be blessed,

regina
