Very warm

At midday, half an hour ago, the mercury had already breached the 80F mark. Maximum temps today will be 90F, 32C. Holland's weather being what it is, we can expect to pay the price by the end of the afternoon or into the evening with some electrical storms and a nosediving temperature. I am aware that our friends over in Texas are at 90F at 4 in the morning at the moment, but they are in a different league. Anything over 30C / 86F is hot in this corner of the globe.

People opposed to the smoking ban scuffled with security guards at a courthouse yesterday, when they tried to attend an appeal against said ban. Keepers of small pubs in Holland fear for their livelihoods, as smokers are driven outside. Not a problem in high summer, but it may come to the fore (they claim) when the weather turns. I am totally non-plussed by this attitude. Barstaff in Scotland were delighted not to have to breathe in second-hand smoke after a ban was introduced their in March 2006.

Glad you have the warm weather.  We had it yesterday !!  I for one was glad when the smoking ban came in over here and now can enjoy a nice meal without the smell of stale cigarette smoke everywhere.  Mind you I suppose some pubs etc have something to worry about as they are certainly closures galore around here..The sad thing is that local planners in their wisdom??? won't let them be sold as private houses or converted ...so eventually we will be left with dozens of not hundrede of derilect buildings in the middle of towns and villages ( we have one here that was actually closed as a pub about 7 years ago and it is now a blight in the village all because of daft planners !!)  LOve  Sybil xx

I know Holland isn't typically at that weather......  here, it's just fine at those temps if not for the daggone humidity.  Albeit, I LOVE a good thunderstorm (and the cooling off, unless it just makes things steamier).

There have been some businesses here, with a smoking ban, that didn't lose income.  Think of all those who can't normally frequent a locale when it has smoking inside, who now can.  Even the smokers I know personally will not smoke inside their own homes or cars, but I don't know how that is for those in Holland.

It is usually unbearable hot here in the deep south of the good ol' US of A during the summer months, but yesterday was quite nice.  I hope today is like that as well, as I have to clean out the garage where we used to live (my son's residence).  A thief took over $3000 in tools and other miscellaneous items from us.  I am all for smoking bans.  Innocent people should not have to breathe someone else's cigarette smoke.  My nephew has cystic fibrosis and cannot go in places where smoking is even allowed.

Have a great day!~

The pub owners here in Washington feared the same thing when the smoking ban went into effect several years ago.  Most have built "butt huts" outside so their patrons can step outside for their smoke time. Business is definitely booming, I haven't seen one single pub shuttered and closed because of the ban.  I wish the smokers/drinkers knew about the high risk of esophageal cancer from the combination of the two irritants. They'd be much better off health wise if they quit smoking. Hot here too.  We're like Holland I guess, once the temp goes over 75*, we start melting. I have no friends or family in this state that have A/C in their houses....just lots of fans.  Linda in WA
